In the summer of 2022, a miner struck more than gold outside Dawson City, in Canada’s Yukon. A fully preserved infant woolly mammoth that died 36,000 years ago protruded from the Arctic permafrost, her flesh still pink and green grass in her belly. The creature’s discovery reignited interest in a species that has long inspired scientific curiosity.
